What Mature Trees Actually Do to a Roof
Overhanging branches drop leaves, seeds, and small debris onto asphalt shingles year-round. That debris doesn't blow off the way it might from an open, sun-exposed slope. It collects in valleys, against pipe boots, and behind chimney step-flashing — and it stays wet. Wet debris held against a shingle gradually breaks down the granule surface that protects the asphalt underneath.
On a north- or east-facing slope that already sees limited direct sun, this process accelerates. Shaded shingles stay damp longer after rain, which gives moss and algae the conditions they need to take hold. Moss is more than a cosmetic problem: its root structure — called rhizoids — penetrates under shingle tabs and pries them away from the surface beneath. Once tabs are lifted even slightly, wind has more purchase and water has a path. The early signs are subtle: granule loss, slightly raised tab edges, slow moisture intrusion at the most vulnerable points.
What a Careful Job Looks Like
On an early-century home under a heavy tree canopy, a thorough roof replacement goes well beyond shingles and underlayment.
- Full deck inspection before installation begins. Homes built roughly between 1900 and 1960 often have skip-sheathing — spaced boards rather than solid plywood — under the original roofing. That's workable, but it requires specific fastening patterns and may need supplemental decking in deteriorated sections. A roofer who doesn't examine the deck before pricing the job is skipping a critical step.
- Ice-and-water shield in every valley and at the eaves. North-facing, shaded slopes can develop ice dams in a hard winter. Ice-and-water membrane behind the drip edge and through every valley isn't a premium add-on on these roofs — it's the baseline.
- Drip edge on all four sides. Older homes frequently have drip edge only on the rakes, not the eaves. Water that runs down the fascia board will eventually rot it. Eave drip edge installed as a standard practice — not an upsell — is a sign a contractor thinks about the whole drainage system.
- Flashing replacement, not patching. Step flashing at dormers or chimneys that has been caulked over is a repair deferred, not resolved. New flashing properly woven into new shingles is the correct approach.
- A moss-prevention plan after installation. On a shaded slope, new shingles are susceptible to the same biological growth as old ones. Zinc or copper ridge strips, or a zinc-treated shingle product, can slow regrowth significantly.
Questions Worth Asking Before You Hire
How do you handle existing skip-sheathing if you find it? What's your approach to moss prevention on shaded slopes after the job is complete? Do you replace all flashing as a matter of course, or only what's visibly failed? How do you manage granule and debris cleanup in the gutters after installation?
